Iranian Protest Statement
Written by WWCode HQ
Women Who Code stands with the Iranian people in their protests for fair treatment, safety, dignity, and equality for Iranian women. We believe all women no matter their country, religion, economic or marital status should have the freedom to exist and thrive in society. Mahsa Amini’s arrest and eventual death for not properly wearing her hijab, was about the Iranian government's control. As a result of Mahsa Amini’s death protests have ignited across Iran, many of them by women, and they’re being met with brutal force as they advocate for change.
The protest in Iran for women’s rights isn’t an isolated incident, and points to the greater issue of a lack of agency and autonomy for women globally. As supporters and allies, we cannot ignore what is happening in Iran due to proximity and privilege.
Our commitment is to continue amplifying the voices of those most directly affected and educating ourselves on the history, issues, and efforts towards ensuring basic freedoms for Iranian women. To our members outside of Iran, join us in learning how to support equality for Iranian women from organizations and platforms committed to supporting and advocating for the rights of Iranian people:
