COMPLY – Data Security
Written by WWCode HQ
Speaker: Brittani Smalls – WWCode Compliance Manager
Brittani Smalls took the stage just after lunch to discuss ways that WWCode could be more compliant with the laws and regulations regarding corporation's, nonprofit's, and the ways that they handle data. She started by discussing the importance of this area of inquiry, as Women Who Code is subject to a variety of laws from different authorities, in different locations, and jurisdictions. She noted that "WWCode is able to do a lot of things because we have that nonprofit status. But if we lose that, we aren't able to do that anymore."
Some of the different areas where we need to be compliant with data include:
Email
Social Media
Trademarks
Events
Meetup Data
Website Data
Visitor Information
"When we talk about this big thing of data regulation, it really starts with small things."
She went on to talk about GDPR regulations, and the ways that WWCode is working to comply with that change in European laws. A mass email was recently sent out to inform all members of the WWCode community to update them on the steps the organization is taking to handle this.
In conclusion, Brittani said, "There will be a lot of changes coming, but they are all with the best intentions."
