Be An Active Ally for Those Living with Disabilities
Written by Liz Harney
July is Disability Pride Month in the United States, and WWCode celebrates technologists living with disabilities. Disability Pride Month began as a commemoration of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. Since this act was signed into law, July 26 is celebrated as Disability Independence Day. This day celebrates triumphs and recognizes the ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive society.
Technology has emerged as a powerful ally, benefitting the lives of people with disabilities. From innovative assistive devices to software solutions, technology has become a significant force in increasing accessibility, communication, and greater independence for people with diverse abilities. In the tech industry, remote work opportunities and teleconferencing tools have expanded employment options by allowing employees to work remotely from their home or access educational resources online.
However, with over one billion people living with disabilities in the world, work must be done to ensure technology and the tech industry remain inclusive and accessible to all. Let’s explore ways to be an advocate for those living with disabilities.
Educate Yourself about various disabilities, their unique challenges, and the accommodations that can help those individuals experiencing disability. Gain an understanding of disability-related terminology and assistive tech. Visit the WWCode YouTube channel to access helpful resources on accessibility.
Be a proactive ally by promoting disability rights and advocating for inclusion. Support disability-related initiatives and legislation that aim to create equal opportunities and remove barriers. Use your voice to challenge stereotypes, promote awareness, and advocate for accessibility in your workplace and community.
Foster open communication and create an environment where individuals feel comfortable expressing their needs, preferences, and challenges. Encourage open dialogue and active listening to understand other’s unique experiences. Respect others privacy while providing a supportive space for individuals to express themselves and seek assistance when needed.
Together we can create a world that embraces talents, strengths, and contributions of every individual, regardless of ability.
