Women Who Code

Speaker: Tami McQueen

Tami McQueen is WWCode's Social Media Manager. During her talk, she discussed the importance of engagement in growing a social audience, as well as some of the plans that Women Who Code has for empowering Network's and Evangelists to take their own social campaigns to the next level.

A central theme of Tami's speech revolved around creating cohesion between the various communities that exist within Women Who Code, so that they can support one another and amplify the individual voice of each group. She admitted that this has been a challenge in the past, but noted that WWCode is working on some important developments that will help standardize messaging, and create support loops that reinforce everyone's communications.

She also discussed some of the content that is most engaging on social media. A lot of the highest engagement posts come from things like inspirational quotes, and uplifting messaging, and noted that this shows how much we really "love championing one another." She went on to say, "The best content is something that truly helps you as a person and a network and encourages you to come together."

In addition, she briefly touched on some of the specific platforms that Women Who Code is focusing on. Twitter is by far the largest and most active audience however, and over the last month WWCode gained 3,000 followers. WWCode is also now starting to focus on Instagram, and stories are being built there regularly to create even more engagement.

Finally, Tami spoke about a new Social Media Landing Page that is being developed, which will contain 4 major sections.
Network Strategy Toolkit: This is everything in a box. It will be a repository of protocols, terminology, hash tags, branding, wording, as well as instructions for publicizing an event, timing of the promotions, and how to hard sell tickets at the end. This will also contain images well as ready-drop templates.
Monthly Hangout: This is an on-line get-together that will take place every month, giving Leaders and Evangelists a chance to discuss best practices, ideas, and marketing strategies to grow their Networks.
Hey Orca: This is an early stage Canadian startup that will allow WWCode to give every Network an integrated social media dashboard with a unique login and time line for promoting their posts.
Resources: This will be a full media library of images, videos, graphics, and materials for crafting great social media messages.
